“The Butter Thief” for violin and marimba

Leilei Tian

performing musicians

At the family concert on January 18 during Frontside 2020, her piece “The Butter Thief” for violin and marimba was premiered by Duo Granmo-Berg.

The piece is inspired by Hindu scriptures, especially the stories and legends surrounding the god Krishna. It describes Krishna’s playful and mischievous behavior as a child, often depicted in various religious texts and folk traditions. In these stories, Krishna is often portrayed as one who steals butter or engages in other playful antics, much to the annoyance of the villagers or herding communities, but his charm and divine nature eventually win them over. This piece illustrates the light-hearted and enchanting nature of Krishna’s interactions with the people around him.
