Karl Nyhlin

Theorbo/Baroque Guitar

Lutenist Karl Nyhlin was born in Umeå and studied at the music academies in Stockholm and Malmö. He then received several major scholarships, including from Fulbright, to go to the USA, where he completed his diploma studies with Prof. Nigel North at IU Bloomington in 2002.

Today, Karl is based in Stockholm but is actively engaged throughout Europe as a soloist and continuo player on various lutes, theorbos, and guitars. He regularly works with prominent European baroque ensembles such as Les Talens Lyriques (FR) and B’Rock (BE), and with conductors like Christophe Rousset and René Jacobs. He is also the principal lutenist at the Drottningholm Theatre.

He has performed in over 35 countries on six continents. Karl has participated in a large number of recordings as an ensemble musician and has recorded two critically acclaimed solo CDs.
