Frode Haltli began playing the accordion at the age of 7. In the following years, he won several national competitions. He studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music and at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he graduated from the soloist class in 2000. Already in 1999, he received the second prize in the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in the Netherlands, and in 2001 he was named “Young Soloist of the Year” by Rikskonsertene (Concerts Norway). In the following years, he established himself as an international soloist and chamber musician. He has been a soloist with orchestras all over the world and has performed with the same ease at festivals for contemporary music in Warsaw, Witten, and Huddersfield as at international chamber music, jazz, and folk music festivals.
Haltli has released a series of albums on the prestigious German record label ECM. The debut album “Looking on Darkness” (ECM 2002) received the Spellemann Prize in the contemporary music category. On “Passing Images” (ECM 2007), trumpeter Arve Henriksen, violist Garth Knox, and singer Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje also participate in a lyrical exploration of folk music towards contemporary music and free improvisation. The albums “Arne Nordheim Complete Accordion Works” (Simax 2012) and “Vagabonde Blu” (Hubro 2014) received favorable reviews. With the help of the Arditti Quartet and TrondheimSolistene, Haitli released “Air” (ECM 2016) featuring music for accordion and strings by Hans Abrahamsen and Bent Sørensen, two composers he has collaborated with for several years. Composers such as Maja S. K. Ratkje, Rolf Wallin, Atli Ingólfsson, Jo Kondo, and Sam Hayden have also written works specifically for Haltli. In addition, Frode Haltli has been involved in numerous transcultural projects and collaborated with Norwegian folk musicians such as Gjermund Larsen, Unni Løvlid, Vegar Vårdal, and Ragnhild Furebotten. He regularly performs with saxophonist Rolf-Erik Nystrøm and double bassist Håkon Thelin in the trio POING, which has premiered more than 60 works by composers from around the world and released several albums. He has also had a long-standing collaboration with saxophonist Trygve Seim, resulting in duo albums “Yeraz” (ECM 2008) and “Rumi Songs” (ECM 2016). Frode Haltli teaches accordion at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
